Skógafoss is a waterfall located on the route of the Skógá River, in the south of Iceland on the cliffs of the former coastline.
The coastline has receded towards the sea (today it is at a distance of around 5 km from Skógar), the previous sea cliffs remained, parallel to the coast along hundreds of kilometers, creating together with some mountains a clear boundary between the coastal lowlands and the Icelandic Highlands.
The Skógafoss is one of the largest waterfalls in the country, 25 meters wide and 60 meters high.
Due to the amount of foam that the waterfall constantly produces, a single or double rainbow is normally visible on sunny days.
According to legend, the first Viking settler in the area, Þrasi Þórólfsson, buried a treasure in a cave behind the waterfall.
A local boy found the chest years later, but was only able to grab the washer on the side of the chest before it disappeared later.
On the eastern side of the waterfall, a hiking trail leads to the Fimmvörðuháls pass between the Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull glaciers.
Go down to Þórsmörk on the other side and continue as the famous Laugavegur to Landmannalaugar.
