Its waters come from the Jökulsá to Fjöllum river, which rises in the Vatnajökull glacier and collects water from a wide basin. It is considered the most powerful waterfall in Europe, with average and maximum recorded flows of 200 and 500 m³ per second, respectively, depending on the season and the glacial melt. It is 100 meters wide and a drop of 44 m to the Jökulsárgljúfur canyon.
